Epic Games announces $100 million prize pool for Fortnite esports

Fortnite is a free-to-play third-person shooter which features building mechanics and even a PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds-like battle royale mode where a hundred players compete for the top spot.

Today, Epic Games announced a major push in the esports market. The developer will provide $100 million for tournament prize pools in the first year of competitive play. The fact that the investment is so large will undoubtedly encourage even more players to pick up the game.

Epic Games issued the following statement alongside the announcement.

Grab your gear, drop in and start training. Since the launch of Fortnite Battle Royale, we’ve watched the passion for community competition grow and can’t wait to empower you to battle with the best. In the 2018 to 2019 season, Epic Games will provide $100,000,000 to fund prize pools for Fortnite competitions. We’re getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different. We plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game. Stay tuned for more details about competitive structures and eligible platforms in the weeks ahead!

This is one of the largest prize pools in gaming history and should cause Fortnite, which is already a sensation, to grow even further. Be sure to check out the game on Xbox One, PC, and other platforms if you haven’t already.
