Last month, Rare shared plans for how it wanted to build on the core Sea of Thieves experience by frequently adding new content. Today, the first of our three summer updates called “The Hungering Deep” launched on Xbox One and Windows 10.
Not only does The Hungering Deep add permanent new content like a fearsome threat, items, and cosmetics, it also marks the first time Rare has run a time-limited campaign. The campaign will run for two weeks and offer players an unforgettable adventure. The goal is to give gamers a new way to play Sea of Thieves, new objectives to work towards, and new rewards to unlock.
You must follow the trail of riddles to piece together what happened to a bard named “Merry” Merrick. Those who can find him and figure out what happened to him can join the hunt for his Jaws-like nemesis. Along the way, you’ll discover a drum, new flags, speaking trumpet, tattoos, and scars. To begin the journey, you have to meet a new character at the nearest tavern.
For those unfamiliar with the title, Sea of Thieves is an exploration-based pirate game which launched on March 20, 2018. Rare is known for many famous franchises including Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, and GoldenEye. However, in recent years, the team focused on developing Kinect games for Xbox One and Xbox 360. When Phil Spencer became Head of Xbox in 2014, he assigned Rare a new project. Sea of Thieves is a shift for the developer and a concept the team hasn’t tackled before.
The game is currently available at retailers for $59.99 or as part of the monthly $9.99 Xbox Game Pass subscription. Sea of Thieves features Xbox One X enhancements and Xbox Play Anywhere support. Future content includes the “Cursed Sails” and “Forsaken Shores” expansions.
